The Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) was founded in July 1973 with Legislative Decree No. 87 of 27 July 1973, and commenced its operation in the academic year 1974-1975. It was named “Democritus” in honor of the ancient Greek philosopher Demokritos, who came from the city of Avdira of Thrace. The Department of Economics was founded in 1999 in Komotini, which is the seat of the Democritus University of Thrace, and the capital of the Administrative Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. It is one of the 5 Departments of the DUTH that were created that year in Xanthi, Alexandroupolis and Orestiada. It began operating in October 1999 in a building of modern architecture at the University campus, along with the Law School. The Department of Economics offers at its first two years of study (4 semesters) common courses for all students. In the last two years (4 semesters) two basic courses of specialization are offered, those of Economic Analysis and Business Administration. The Department attempts in this way to provide its graduates with both the general and specialized knowledge of Economics and Business Administration that are found in the academic community but are also required by the modern labor market internationally. The Curriculum of the Department of Economic has been developed in the light of the needs of academic knowledge, academic ethics, teaching and pedagogical experience, labor market needs and international standards in the field of economic science today and is constantly being improved by the decisions of the General Assembly of the Department. The Department already cooperates with foreign universities at the level of Erasmus programs while the students of the Department have the opportunity to take advantage of the existing bilateral agreements as well as to participate in the University Internship Program. In this way they interact on one hand with students and educational institutions abroad, on the other hand with the labor market, thus achieving the enrichment of the knowledge acquired through the Curriculum of the Department. This experience is extremely important to enhance their background and works in a beneficial manner for shaping their personality by providing them with additional knowledge and expertise.
